Meet the Artists

Cynthia Fleury
LPGS Co-Owner, Photographic Artist

My goal is to impart a sense of serenity and beauty to the viewer especially during these difficult times. My light-filled photographic art captures poetic moments in time.  I have an affinity for nature and travel in my work and I work in both in color and black & white. My passion is experimental photography and other creative processes and techniques including infrared photography and digital and/or physical painting and gilding.    I have exhibited nationally and internationally and have work in collections worldwide. My numerous awards include the prestigious Amelia Peabody Award and Medal of Honor for Printmaking, Photography and Digital Art from the National Association of Women Artists.

John A Olson
LPGS Co-Owner, Photographic Artist

I am drawn to motion with equestrian themes, rodeo action, dance, and various sports with an experimental interpretation of that moment in time.  During more restful periods I like to work with the beauty of rural landscapes and architectural elements of cityscapes.  I’ve exhibited throughout the Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota area.  Primarily, I am self taught with help from the Vision Quest workshops, Tony Stromberg workshops, and Santa Fe Workshops.

Brian Billadeau
LPGS Co-Owner, Artist, Photographic Artist, Designer

My whole life, I’ve been surrounded by and deeply involved in the arts. I’m a fine, graphic and commercial visual artist and photographer — traditional and experimental with multiple disciplines and mediums. I’m also a maker, woodworker, and stained glass artist. My Lens Painted series, my camera is my brush and everything becomes paint, blurring the line between photography and painting, truly in-camera paintings put to canvas. With a 30+ year career in arts and advertising, I’ve bridged both the traditional and digital worlds. While I’m professionally satisfied as a designer/photographer, the fine arts are what I’m most passionate about. My work has received numerous recognitions, local and national awards, exhibited and published widely.

Steven McHugh
REPRESENTED ARTIST
Steven McHugh is well known for his beautiful, emotional abstract paintings inspired by Madeline Island and time-worn textures.

STEVEN'S ARTIST STATEMENT:
Steve’s paintings are inspired by the natural processes of weather, time, cause and effect. Celebrating the beauty of a well-worn surface and an aesthetic of imperfection. My works are developed as visceral responses to my environment, ambiguous organic forms emerge from a play on negative and positive space; balancing, teetering, barely touching yet they creates tension between the shapes. The varied materials I uses are subjected to layering, peeling, scraping, scratching, heat and abrasion, in a similar way in which the earth’s surface is exposed to the elements of fire, wind and water. My process is equally accidental and purposeful, intuitive and thoughtful. as paint is applied, then scratched and scraped back, a narrative is generated and a layering of history is revealed. Steven and his wife moved to Madeline Island, Lake Superior, in 2010 and are full time residents.

Tomás Alvarez
REPRESENTED ARTIST
Tomás Alvarez is a master travel landscape photographer, capturing and creating breathtaking images that will transport you there.

TOMAS' ARTIST STATEMENT:
I’m Tomas Alvarez from Woodbury, Minnesota. My photography is my sanity – an escape from the daily grind. When I’m not working as a Software Engineer, or with family, you’ll find me – camera in hand, somewhere between Michigan’s UP and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Listening to the waves of Lake Superior, watching leaves fall on a trail in deep Autumn, and witnessing the dawn of a new day are just a few of nature’s gifts that keep me on my photographic journey. I also work on several side projects besides my own publications and artistic work. I greatly enjoy working on projects that create opportunities for other artists.

Tom Fletcher
EXCLUSIVE REPRESENTED ARTIST
Tom's Heads & Moons capture and fascinate visitors of all ages. Since Tom only produces a limited number of pieces each year, his work has become highly collectable.

TOM'S ARTIST STATEMENT:
When I was in art school my teachers often told me my sculptures looked like toys. As time passed I began designing toys. I have been influenced by circus and theater images, but I do not always try to portray innocence or the sweet side of a child’s world. I began making large paper heads after a visit to Central America, where I taught some classes in a small village for a few years. One year I taught some of the local village artist to make large paper heads and people of the village reacted strongly to the spectacle of huge paper heads floating in the air. We began calling the heads, Moons and when I returned home I made few more. Perhaps it was my way to maintain some contact with a place I developed affection for. I think the faces are imagined portraits of people I miss or at times people I know at home. Many nights, as I work late I find myself talking to these strange heads and they seem to come alive in my hands. It is a form of therapy, I suppose, but the heads keep their secrets. They sometimes have the same effect on other people with active imaginations.
